We covered 24 kilometers in less than 6 total hours today. Maybe it was the cool, cloudy weather. Maybe we have found the rhythm on the up-and-down trails of this picturesque part of Spain. Maybe it was the palpable energy of all the pilgrims as we get closer to Santiago. Maybe it was the desire to get some laundry done at our next location. Maybe it was the prospect of meeting up with friends for dinner. Whatever the reasons…we made very good time on our antepenultimate day on the Camino (yes, that is the word for the thing before the thing before the last of some thing.)
We (or at least I) find ourselves getting nostalgic about the Camino even before it is over. I am suddenly calling out all the “last” or “final” stuff on the Camino. (I.e. “This is our last time to buy deep heating cream for sore muscles. Remember when we bought our first tube? Who’d have thought we would become such heavy users of Flexall 454? Who even knew that Flexall 454 still existed?”) Ah…yes…we were so much younger then. In that same spirit…here is a photo of Sarah on one of the last Roman bridges of the Camino. That is also her giving me her “last” pointed direction to “Take the picture already!” I will miss these special moments.
Our good friends from Spain, Yayo and Pilar, flew up from Seville and joined us for dinner Friday night in Castañeda. They will also join us on Saturday for our penultimate day of walking. The weather forecast calls for rain all day, winds out of the northwest at 10-15 miles per hour and a high temperature of 49 degrees. They are really good friends.
In closing…Any caption suggestions for this photo?
What will happen if a black rooster crosses your path?
I like it, Katja…plays off the black cat phobia!
At least we know now why the chicken crossed the road. To create a photo opportunity for pilgrims on the Camino.
Nice, Barry…leveraging the classic question.
Sure it is exciting to have friends join you. Have great last days walking the Camino!
I’m really enjoying your adventure and learning new words at the same time (antepenultimate). I used my dictionary app. to learn how to pronounce the word. I can’t wait to use it in a sentence.
I received my copy of ” The Way” from Amazon. Leann and Amanda are at my house for Mother’s Day so we intend to watch the movie tonight. Thanks for sharing your journey!
