Camino 2018 - Days 15-21

Day 16 – Boadilla del Camino to Carrión de Los Condes

We began the day with a chilly 3-mile walk out of Boadilla del Camino along the edge of the Canal de Castilla.  It reminded us of our lucky time living along the Thames River in Richmond outside London.  The flowing water…the cold breeze…the singing birds…all reminded us of London.  The bright sunshine…we do not recall as much.

The remaining 15 miles of the day took us through 3 different small towns basically along a straight path.  Although the path did not change much, the fields on either side were a deep green and the snow-covered Cantabrian Mountians were clearly visible far off on our right hand side to the North.  We made our best time ever as Sarah pushed the pace.  I think she was inspired by the flat, straight course and this “Camino” song recommended by our friend, Katja.

Today was our 15th day of walking.  We came to the realization that during that period we have used only our feet as locomotion.  Neither of us could remember when we had gone that long without being in a car, on a train, on a bus, on a subway, on a plane, or on the people mover at Disney.  Maybe when we were infants?  We have certainly learned that we can all reduce our carbon footprints.   But does it really require this many footprints?

We stopped by an albergue mid-day for a bite to eat.  As we were waiting for our food, I heard the speaker system playing the unmistakable opening notes of the great 1975 Nazareth hit “Love Hurts”.  But with a twist…this version was sung in the style of Gregorian chant.  At first I laughed, but the longer I listened, the more I liked it.  Maybe it is not a coincidence that the hotel we are staying at tonight is an old, renovated monastery.  We are expecting the dinner entertainment (and menu) tonight to include some Meatloaf.

  1. Love the ‘Love Hurts’ version. Can’t wait to hear some more classic 70’s rock sung by the monks. I wonder what “Orgy” from Sts. Peter and Paul would have done with Nazereth? Keep up the good work. You’re more than half way, correct?

    1. Good question, Jim. I actually would prefer to hear Orgie go the other way and do the old church songs but with a harder, rock beat. Imagine what he could do with “The strife is o’er…the battle done…!”

  2. Hello pilgrims, we do not know if you are aware that almost without realizing it, (well, your feet, your joints and your bodies in general are really taking a lot of notice), you’ve been half the way. CONGRATULATIONS !!! At the moment you deserve an outstanding.
As you tell the road is now in a monotonous phase, that’s why Pilar and I could not avoid transporting you to your beautiful house in London, where one damp and rainy early morning we met Dave.
Good rest, good dinner with meat and good wine from the land !!!!

  3. Loved the Gregorian Chant rendition of “Love Hurts.” Thanks for sharing! It brought back great memories of my 3-days in a Trappist Monastery in Iowa forty years ago……………where the monks got up at 4:00 a.m. to sing God’s praises! This was much more “user-friendly” sitting in my chair in Seattle looking west toward the snow-capped Olympia Mountains.

    1. Monasticism’s loss was our gain. Hope your re enjoying the view with a nice Washington “tinto”.

  4. Heard when the Gregorians recorded some Meat Loaf tunes, every 3rd song had issues. Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
