Today we arrived in Burgos, the capital of the province of Burgos, in the autonomous region of Castille and Leon.
The change in venue from morning until afternoon was drastic. We began the day in a small burg (San Juan de Ortega) of 20 people and finished the afternoon walking into a city with a population of nearly 200,000. In addition to demographic change, we also experienced significant meteorological change…as we began the morning by walking in a thick, cold fog and finished in warm sunshine.
In the morning…our visibility was severely limited…there was a cold wind on our necks…and a haunting sound began emanating from the fields…we could not see from where these ominous notes were coming…disturbing and disrupting the morningsong of the birds…but it was there…oh yes it was there. Anticipating the payoff of a “Blair Witch Project” sequel…I turned on the camera….listen if you dare…
Yes…you heard it…the plaintive yet somehow terrifying tones of…that most diabolical of musical instruments…the most powerful tool of the percussion family…a harbinger of imminent doom…COWBELL!!!
Only seconds later…the tension and horror and mystery came to its obvious, horrible conclusion…please use discretion with anyone under age 18 before viewing the next video…

Honestly…walking through a field of cows was a bit unnerving for us city slickers. But the cows were too busy “ruminating” to care about us.
Borgus is the biggest city we have visited to date on the Camino…and we needed to walk through about 5 miles of uninspiring, urban sprawl (business parks, factories, warehouses) before arriving in the historical city center. A few fellow pilgrims opted out of this portion and took the bus into the city center. We stayed the course…of course. Our reward as we emerged from the warehouse district…our first visit to a McDonald’s in Spain! Although tempted by the opportunity to order a McPollo (makes sense…no McChicken), we opted for ice cream sundaes.
Our hotel room tonight looks right out on Borgus Cathedral. Officially known as the Cathedral of St. Mary of Borgus. Many consider this cathedral to be even more impressive than the one in Santiago de Compostela. We spent 1 hour walking/limping through a structure that easily requires a half-day to properly appreciate. We probably should have scheduled an extra day here. A good reason to return.
We know the previous videos in today’s posts may have frightened you…so we decided to include a more pleasant video from outside Borgus cathedral …to our Moms.
Thanks so much for the posts and videos (especially the one to the moms.). Loved it. Was great to hear your voices and see you!
Looks like a beautiful city. Enjoy !
I really wish you would have ordered a cheeseburger at McDonalds, and then compared it to the meticulously wrapped offering at your standard Tokyo McDonalds. I would have enjoyed to see who prepared it better!
It’s good to know if I ever tried to recreate what you two are doing, I would only have to survive 13 days without having access to good old American fast food. Let me know how many more days before you see the second Mickey Dees? (Did they even offer the Filet-o-Fish?)
They did offer the filete de pescado…just doesn’t have the same ring as the “filet-O”
Hello pilgrims, you look very good and very dark in the video.
Probably that feeling of lack of time to enjoy the treasures of a beautiful and great cathedral as is that of Burgos you will feel it again when you arrive at the Cathedral of León, impressive as well.
We hope that the climate, the landscapes, the cowbells and especially the light that touches you tomorrow will bring to mind other less disturbing films.
Good way.
We are enjoying your posts and wish you all the best on the remainder of your pilgramage. Safe travels!!!
Thanks, Dennis. Hope all is well with you!
You gotta watch out for those wild cows!!! & Mc Donald’s on “the Way”. Who knew!!!
Wow! What a change from morning to afternoon – very cool!
I’m sure the Moms will love the video greeting.
Love the video postings!
